The newest chart weights enclose a working thermometer and a 5x-magnifying lens. The two original brass chart weights enclose a liquid filled compass or a quartz clock. Each chart weight is lacquered so it will not tarnish or show fingerprints. The bottom of each weight is felt lined to protect the surface it rests on and to prevent slipping.
